Dutchmans Beach

Carrington

In the 1830's Carrington was the centre for the Australian Agricultural Company. The stone church, formerly St. Andrews (1846), was for a while a Youth Hostel. Early settlers were buried in a cemetery on the northern side of the road between Carrington and Tahlee. Tahlee House (1826) is now a Bible College.

Fingal Bay

Fingal Bay originally called False Bay. The entrance was often in days of sail and steam mistaken for the entrance into Port Stephens. One of the only two patrolled surf beaches in Port Stephens and closest to Nelson and Shoal Bay. The beach is very popular with surfers and is protected by the headland in the southern corner and opens to the ocean swell further up the beach. This magnificent beach with an infamous walk across "the spit" to view burnt out ruins of the outer lighthouse residence and breathtaking views of Fingal Head. There is some great fishing off the beach as well as the Headlands.

Jimmy´s Beach

Jimmy's Beach is located on the pristine North Shores of Port Stephens, around 2 1/2 hours north of Sydney it is a beautiful place to take the family, it is situated between an ideal children's beach and surfing beach in a bush setting. Jimmy's Beach is also considered to be the best area for windsurfing. Ocean swells are felt in this area. The sandhills on the spit joining Yacaaba Heads are worth exploring.

Looking out from Jimmy's Beach you get the opportunity to set your sights on three of the ten offshore islands off Port Stephens, the largest along the NSW coast. Cabbage Tree Island, prohibited to humans, is the only breeding site in the world for the rare seabird Gould's Petrel. Several islands make up the nearby Broughton Group. The largest of the islands has walking tracks and dazzling white beaches.

Karuah

Karuah is a peaceful village situated on the mouth of the Karuah River, at the western end of Port Stephens. It is considered the gateway to the northern arm of Port Stephens. All are welcome to relax at the riverside park near the wharf, swim in the tidal pool, traverse the adjacent wetlands or purchase that special oyster at one of Port Stephen's world famous oyster farms.

Lemon Tree Passage

Originally called Kooindah or "Clear Water". Lemon Tree Passage was renamed because of the lemon groves found by early visitors to the area. The word "passage" in the name refers to the use of the water ways for travel north of Salt Ash.

Located on Tilligery Creek is lined with oyster racks and mangroves. The best reasons for spending a night here are seclusion and blue swimmer crabs. Anchor fore and aft to one side of the channel. The township offers a variety of gentle, coastal walking trails and a central boat ramp provides direct access to the port's mainstream.

Lemon Tree Passage, which has attracted an increasing number of retirees in recent years, is also one of the prime secluded spots on the southern shore of a waterway which is now firmly established among the finest aquatic playgrounds on Australia's east coast.

Nelson Head

Home of the Port Stephens Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol and Nelson Bay Inner Lighthouse. The lighthouse was erected on Nelson Head in 1872. It was originally powered by four kerosene lamps. The last upgrade to the Nelson Head tower Inner Lighthouse was in 1995 when solar powered occulting white and red sector light was installed. A trust was established in 1986 to restore the Inner Lighthouse and cottage, and since then has become a major tourist attraction for Port Stephens and is now heritage listed. The views from the lighthouse are panoramic and stunning.

Little Beach is a very popular safe beach for the children to swim and a good picnic area, with barbecues available. With a four lane all tide boat ramp with fish cleaning tables and loads of trailer parking. Great place to launch your trailer boat adventure.

North Arm Cove

Bundabah Creek can be entered from the North Eastern corner of North Arm Cove. The height of the tide can be added to the depths shown on the local map. With mirror reflections and lots of wildlife this narrow creek is Port Stephens best kept secret. Definitely worth the visit!

Oyster Cove

Once the site of the largest oyster farm in the Southern Hemisphere, Oyster Cove's response to the massive changes in the oyster industry is to diversify into the largest marine service centre in Port Stephens. A pleasant walk along the foreshore east of Oyster Cove follows a disused private road through a forest of swamp mahogany, with views over the waters of Big Swan Bay.

Shoal Bay

Shoal Bay was supposedly named by Governor Lachlan Macquarie because of the sand shoals that exist there. Shoal Bay overlooks the magnificent Tomaree and Yacaaba headlands. Sweeping beach fronting Shoal Bay is clean and unspoilt; the water is clear and sparkling. This village provides many eateries/restaurants and a good shopping centre, and a variety of activities, including bike hire, catamaran hire and walking tracks through Tomaree National Park all on or near the beach front. There is a two lane boat ramp giving easy access to the Heads for the outside fisherman. Excellent rock fishing is available from the Headland or Ocean Beaches.
